KNOW OURSELVES

Know Ourselves features the life and work of 46 Belizean creatives and artists. The 116 page book was developed with research and contributions by Katie Numi Usher, Ingrid Cayetano, Ilona Smiling and Briheda Haylock.

Choosing these four women as contributors was intentional. Their insights are grounded in years of making, experimenting, organizing, teaching, and building community. They represent the many women who have shaped—and continue to shape—Belize’s creative imagination.

The choices of the 46 women featured in these pages are powerful, outstanding creative persons. Their selection reflects our diverse intentions, research methods, and lived experiences.

Creative Writing

For the first time since the 1990s, the National Festival of Arts proudly welcomes the return of creative writing— an art form that ignites the imagination, captures emotions, and gives young people an outlet to express their experiences and views.

This collection brings together the literary voices of Belize’s youth and demonstrates the wonder and power of creative writing. Each poem and story reveals the creativity, talent and boldness of our young writers. Some feature adventure, others reveal personal truths, but each piece demonstrates the courage it takes to put words on a page and share them with the world.

At the Institute of Creative Arts (NICH), we are committed to nurturing all forms of artistic expression, and this publication is a reflection of that mission. We champion literature as an essential pillar of the creative arts. We must nurture our young poets, novelists, playwrights and screenwriters.

To the students whose works are published here: Whether you write to entertain, challenge or inspire, know that you are contributing to Belize’s creative future. Your voice matters. Keep discovering that voice. May this collection be just the beginning of all that you will gift to the world through writing.

Belize creative

As an artist conceived on the crest of a cultural century in an old capital (Belize City), cultivated on crumbling colonial architecture, I often find myself lucky to be armed with an unsteady hand and an often screaming cultural membrane. You see artists are not 9 to 5’s, not assembly lines, not Made in America, not machines, but pure soul. A soul which is not seen on t.v., not gift wrapped, at Macy’s, not pulled by political lines but felt. Felt by those who know sanity is just a word which would be nothing without in-sanity.

Poustinia

Poustinia Earth Art Park, a former cattle ranch with an area of 270 acres, is situated 2 miles off Benque Viejo del Carmen, Cayo District, Belize, on the Mollejon Road. Benque Viejo is 8 miles from San Ignacio Town along the Western border with Guatemala.

Poustinia is an environmental project in which art and nature interact. Some artists have used man-made factors in combination with natural elements to create what is known as sited sculptures. In other instances, there has been extensive manipulation of the environment, which has involved displacement of large amounts of rock and soil with practically no utilization of man-made elements. This has been categorized as purely land or earth art.
