Chinchi Poems
Many visitors will read these words. You should know that you hold a small slice of one of Belize’s most prolific lyrical dub poet, known to his country people as The Grandmaster.
Born in Belize (1967) Leroy Young, the Grandmaster grew up in Belize City, specifically Pinks Alley. The cultural space where cruise tourists disembark is his office.
Media leaders have referred to him as the Shakespeare of the streets, and the bard of the underbelly.
For almost three decades, the Grandmaster has entertained, and given consciousness lessons to those who listen.
Chinchi is a Belize Kriol word that means very small. Like a Haiku, these chinchi poems are a push back to the elaborate poetic movements that most in society formally associate as traditions.
